The Stevin Locks are a complex of locks in the Afsluitdijk near Den Oever. Together with the Lorentz locks at Kornwerderzand, they control the water level of the IJsselmeer, and thus also of the hinterland. Water from the IJsselmeer is discharged into the Wadden Sea. The Stevin Locks are named after Hendrik Stevin, who published the earliest known plan to seal off the Zuiderzee in 1667.
Collective fall protection through exposed fencing
The Stevin lock is located on the IJsselmeer, where considerable wind forces can be present. There are facilities on the roof of the control room that need to be checked regularly. Because of the small roof area, a person is quickly in the danger area with falls from height as a risk. The client asked Eyecatcher for a solid solution to prevent this risk.
Through a survey and analysis of the risk of falling from height, the only safe solution was a collection protection in the form of exposed fencing. Since the control room has a much angular shape, the fencing also had to follow its shape. To carry out the project safely, an RI&E was conducted. First, temporary safety measures were taken, which allowed the fencing to be installed safely. Because of the high wind speeds, extra ballast was also chosen, to securely secure the fencing on top of the roof surface.
