New Limmel floodgate protects Limburg hinterland
Keerschutsluis Limmel is an eighty-year-old floodgate in the Juliana Canal near Maastricht. It forms an important link in the Meuse route connecting Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and France and provides protection against flooding.

Not only was the floodgate in need of replacement, its function would also be changed. It protects the Juliana Canal and the hinterland when the Meuse overflows its banks.
